13th February 2023 Mt. Biking: Alton Water circuit Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: sunny periods Max Speed: 18.66 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 11 miles (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Monday 13th February – bike ***** Circuit of Alton Water – sunny periods with a light breeze. We are now trying to get of the Felixstowe area at least once a week for a walk or bike so Mag and I decided to head over to Sutton Church to bike around Alton Water as todays forecast was good, light winds with sunny periods:) We got up early and both managed our exercises, then with a picnic packed we left home at 10 to drive the 18 miles arriving at the lovely church with yet more snowdrops at 10.30. It was only a mile down quiet lanes to Alton Water a spot I have windsurfed many times years ago, in fact we had loads of fun there when our boys were small:) We parked at the church because it is now very expensive to park on site, good old Anglian Water! We headed over to the water sports centre first to take some pics of the jetties, no one on the water today with the breeze being too light. The early cloud had now disappeared as we crossed the long dan with great views down the reservoir and some picked up the cycle track which considering it is half term was surprisingly quiet, just now we like it. We cycled slowly on the undulating path around many inlets taking several detours to get closer to the waters edge or to visit bird hides. The section leading to Lemon Hill Bridge is particularly up and down and we were pleased to have some electric assistance:) There was a lot of hedgerow birds flitting about including long tailed tits, robins, blackbirds and at the first hide we stopped at saw cormorant’s drying their wings, grebes. Coots, geese and gulls. It seemed to take an age to reach Lemon Hill Bridge which we crossed just before midday and found a lovely wooded area full of snowdrops before continuing to the double bird hides, sadly the best one was closed and there was nothing to be seen from the other so we continued on our way passing only the odd person walking and one family on their bikes! We found a path by the lake for walking only so pushed our bikes until we found a beautiful and peaceful spot by the water edge to have our picnic and our roll were very yummy too! Well rested we continued to walk back to the cycle path to carry on, then within sight of the sailing centre we came across 9 amazing Old Breed Highland cattle in a small field overlooking the water. They were absolutely wonderful, such a lovely colour, covered in long shaggy hair with a long fringe so we could not see their eyes. Some were enjoying some fresh hay, while others were chewing the Cudd as some scratched themselves on the fence, we spent ages enjoying them, I got some nice pics too before leaving by the main entrance again. Turning left towards the impressive Holbrook School to turned down Church Lane and back to the van. A quite walk around yet another lovely old Suffolk Church, taking yet more snowdrop shoots. It is good to see how the other half live as we were surrounded by some huge houses including one that belong to Griff Rhys Jones with great views down to the River Stour. It was then a fairly quick journey home, stopping to take a pic of the Orwell Bridge, stopping off at Sports Direct to buy some Gortex shoes as mine are falling to pieces with Mag getting some pansies from B & M before home for a well-deserved cuppa and cake. A top 5 star day out enjoying picturesque Suffolk, might get up early again for a Valentine’s Day stroll to catch the sunrise, how romantic:) Photo Album here Alton Water |
